Code of Conduct Statement Related to Cyberbullying

Although many schools have zero-tolerance policies in place for traditional bullying, they often lack clear guidelines regarding digital harassment—especially because online bullies rarely use school equipment. While you are updating your AUP to include use of electronic devices, be sure you include a statement in your code of conduct.

California School Board Association Policy on Cyberbullying
A policy brief with considerations for identifying and stopping misconduct and determining limits of authority. Recommendations for writing board policies are given.

Pasco County School Board Code of Conduct Statement
The Code of Student Conduct includes references to cyberbullying, unauthorized use of audio devices, and abuse of technology. [See page 8].
"The school board has no duty to regulate or review off-campus Internet messages, statements postings, or acts" but adds that when those acts "threaten violence against another student or otherwise disrupts the learning environment or orderly conduct of the school," the school can take action, from conferencing in parents and students, to expulsion.

Garden City Board of Education
Defines cyberbullying in their code as "inflicting willful and/or repeated harm through the use of electronic text, threatening or harassing students or school personnel over the phone or e-mail, or using message boards to convey threats, derogatory comments or post pornographic pictures of students or school personnel."

Internet Code of Conduct
Melvindale-Northern Allen Park Public Schools outline their expectations for student code of conduct and tie them in to their acceptable use policy.

Netiquette: The Code of Conduct for the Internet

The internet is one of the most ambigious forms of communication due to the way one can convey information to another person. This is why "Netiquette" was created. It is basically some guidelines of normative behavior for the internet. Awareness of these rules will help you communicate and interact with others with out any kind of problems or misunderstandings.

Lake County Schools Code of Conduct
Lake County School District (Florida) has provided an excellent code of conduct statement that applies to acts both on and off-campus. They also have a comprehensive policy for bullying and cyberbullying.
