November 2008 - Web 2.0 Resources

The purpose of this section is to share web 2.0 tools and resources being used by middle school math teachers and coaches. The section will include such tools as wikis, podcasts, videos, blogs, Google tools, and other resources available on the read/write web.

A. Wikis - A wiki is a page or collection of Web pages designed to enable any user to contribute or modify content

B. Blogs – A blog, short for Web log, is a Web site with entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video in reverse order.

C. Video

  • Mathtrain.TV is a free educational "kids teaching kids" project from Mr. Marcos & his students at Lincoln Middle School in Santa Monica, CA. - http://www.mathtrain.tv/
  • Screencasts (screen movies of writing with voice) that focus on mathematics. There are a large selection of screencasts organized by topic, type and course. - http://www.mathcasts.org/

D. Social network groups

E. Diigo - Digest of Internet Information, Groups and Other stuff. Diigo is both a research and collaborative research tool and a knowledge-sharing community; search for math - http://www.diigo.com/

F. Podcasts – a series of audio or digital media files for which you can subscribe.

  • You can go to the iTunes stores and do a search, under podcasts, for middle school math. The podcasts are free. There are many middle school math series.
  • The Education Podcast Network is an effort to bring together into one place, the wide range of podcast programming that may be helpful to teachers looking for content to teach with and about, and to explore issues of teaching and learning in the 21st century - http://epnweb.org/

G. Other Web 2.0 resources

  • Real World Math - This website is designed for educators who wish to extend the concepts of the math curriculum beyond the pages of the text. Google Earth is the dynamic tool that is used to accomplish this.

  • FREE MATH HOMEWORK HELP  GRADES K - 12
    Math teachers are waiting to help you!  You have to do the work yourself, but you don't have to do it alone.  Math mentor is a television program produced by the Santa Clara County Office of Education that assists students with their math homework.  Students receive assistance from credentialed math teachers either live during the broadcast or off air.

If you are looking for software to enhance your math program, visit the California Learning Resource Network (CLRN), one of the four California Statewide Educational Technology Services (SETS) projects. CLRN makes it easy for you to find the standards-aligned software, video and Internet learning resources you need. CLRN experts have identified, reviewed and organized hundreds of Electronic Learning Resources (ELRs) in a searchable database that allows you to compare key features of selected resources. The Web Information Links (WILs) let you search or browse hundreds of free primary, secondary and reference resources.


April 2008 - Test Prep

piPi Day Resources - in celebration of March 14th, Pi Day. Links to various resources about Pi and fun activities for students.

 

February 2008 - Differentiation of Instruction Resources

Differentiation of Instruction (DI) - If you are looking for articles and books that address this topic, this site has links to relevant and current information on the DI topic. It also includes resources for DI with English Language Learners.


January 2008 - Assessment Resources

Among the many web pages that comprise the Middle School Math are those that focus on differentiation of Instruction. The assessment section contains articles about classroom data collection and methodology. It also houses links to pre-assessment tools, quiz sites, rubrics, math journals, identifying learning styles and much more.
